LUMINOUS PERFORMANCE IN 2007 HKCEE - STUDENTS’ SHARING

This year, our students performed very well in the HKCEE. Over 30 students got 24 points or above and amongst them,
3 got 30 points. They are 5B Chan Ka Ling Florence, 5D Ma Tsz Kiu Timothy and 5E Pang Kit Yee Kitty. These three students have always endeavoured to study hard and strive for excellence. They want to share with the fellow schoolmates about how they succeeded.

I believe that if we have the passion to learn, there is no reason why we cannot successfully acquire knowledge. As far as our studies are concerned, especially English, I think we can learn more effectively in the following ways. First, we should prepare for each and every lesson. If we have preliminary understanding of the content, we will know which parts we should pay more attention to when we have our lessons later. If we come across anything difficult, we can then ask our teachers or classmates for help. Otherwise, we can never fully understand the content. Second, we should develop good reading habits. Through extensive reading, we can broaden our horizons and learn something which cannot be found in our textbooks. It is good to jot down some well-written phrases too, as this can help to enrich the content of our writing. Last but not least, we should actively participate in the activities held at our school, the best being English Speaking Wednesdays, for they provide us with a wide exposure to English and a good learning environment. If we persist in learning using the above methods, we will be able to grasp knowledge without any difficulties.

My school life consists of both productive and challenging moments. When I learn something new in the classroom and immerse myself in all branches of knowledge, I feel delighted. When I am baffled by the difficulties in the process persuading me to give up, I feel depressed. I still have to overcome them though; otherwise I will never grow and will only stay at where I am. I believe as long as I keep on trying, I will finally succeed and the joy I gain at that time will make me feel worthy. While we are learning every day, we have to bear one point in mind which in that we are in fact very small people who know very little in this vast universe. We must be humble and proceed until the end.

‘Can you share something about how you study?’ someone asked me. This question really did test me a bit—basically I could not think of much to say except ‘WORK HARD’. Perhaps, to be more accurate, ‘THINKING HARD AND REINFORCING HARD’ is my attitude towards studying. ‘THINKING HARD’ means that we should accept knowledge after digesting and understanding it; ‘REINFORCING HARD’ means that we should do more exercises to consolidate what we have learnt. Maybe you have listened to the above words millions of times and find them boring. However, doesn’t it prove that lots of people feel and experience the same as I do, and believe that ‘working hard’ is important? Being a locally born and bred Hongkonger without receiving any special English courses, I do not have the so called ‘talent’ for speaking in English. In the past, I was always criticized by teachers for having too many ‘r’ sounds in my spoken English, making it very unnatural. In order to improve, I spent time speaking English and listening to foreigners speaking English every day. Luckily staying at CDG, an EMI school, I am provided lots of learning opportunities to improve my English. Because my efforts have paid off, my oral English has improved quite a lot, and I even got a ‘star’ for my CE English Oral Exam. If we work hard, nothing is impossible. Of course, studying is not only about being hard-working, but also methodology. Yet if one doesn’t make an effort, probably methodology will be ineffective.
